Casa Verapaz sits in Santa Catarina Palopó, a small Kaqchikel Maya community on the shores of Lake Atitlán.
Tourism is present here, but everyday community life remains at the center. Traditional dress, Kaqchikel and Spanish, boats, local shops and village routines are part of what you experience simply by stepping outside the gates.

Santa Catarina sits between steep green mountains and Lake Atitlán, facing the volcanoes across the water. There is essentially one main road through the village, with smaller streets and paths leading toward the lake.

Santa Catarina is wonderfully laid-back, without the constant movement of a larger commercial center. When you want more restaurants, shopping or transportation, Panajachel is about 10–15 minutes away by road.

Cultural identity remains highly visible in everyday life. We encourage guests to experience the village with curiosity and respect, support local businesses when possible and ask before photographing people.
More than the painted houses.
Santa Catarina's painted homes draw inspiration from Maya textiles and local visual traditions. The community has been recognized through Guatemala's Pueblo Pintoresco program, but the village is more than its color: look beyond the painted walls and you find the community that gives them meaning.
Lake Atitlán at your doorstep.
Casa Verapaz has natural lake access, and kayaks are available to rent right next door. Private boats can be arranged through trusted local providers, while the public pier in Santa Catarina is a short walk from our lakeside entrance.
A reminder that this is volcanic country.
Naturally heated water emerges along the lakeshore near Casa Verapaz. The experience is simple: warm water, cool lake and mountains around you.

Most days are wonderfully relaxed, but village life has its own rhythms. You may occasionally hear church bells, religious services or music during the day or evening, as well as dogs, boats, fireworks and community celebrations. Fireworks can sometimes happen early in the morning around local festivities.
